Gold is somewhat more stable an investment than silver, but it has been known to be the subject of hoarding and speculation. Tying a currency to it has historically left an entire nation completely screwed when the market gets flooded for one reason or another.
USD is doing quite well for the moment.. It went down by maybe 8 cents and then back up again in the past 2 years. Silver on the other hand went all the way up to $48/oz, then back down to it’s current resting place at $28/oz. It’s a very volatile commodity. It’s entirely possible for USD to devalue if the right circumstances happen, and the mint is supposed to constantly monitor this so they can destroy bills if it does happen.
